Qantas Wallabies’ player, James O’Connor, asks Australians to ‘help the world drink too’

Ethical bottled water brand, One Water, has appointed Qantas Wallabies’ player James O’Connor as an ambassador.  The announcement comes during National Water Week (17 – 23 October) and James O’Connor is calling on Australians to not only consider water issues in Australia but to remember that there are over 1 billion people around the world who do not have access to clean water.

One Water, which gives 100% of its profits to fund clean water projects in developing countries, is sold in Woolworth’s supermarkets across Australia, as well as universities, petrol stations, cafes and a range of other ethically minded retailers.    It is available in 600ml bottles, 1.5 litre bottles, and multipacks, and has been the official water supplier to the Qantas Wallabies since March 2010.

Alicen Spencer, CEO of Global Ethics Australia said, “James was selected as an ambassador for One Water because of his passion and enthusiasm for the work we do.  Australians spend more than half a billion dollars a year on bottled water and in stark contrast two million people die each year from drinking contaminated water.  We’re not trying to grow the Australian bottled water market, we’re just asking current buyers to make an educated purchase.  By simply switching their usual bottled water brand to One Water, Australians can now directly help provide clean, safe drinking water to villages and schools in Africa and Asia”.

James said: “When I heard about the work that One Water is doing, I was very excited to get involved and see firsthand the impact that this was having around the world.  Having grown up in Australia, it is easy to take clean running water for granted, however, being fortunate enough to travel the world playing rugby, I have seen that not everyone is as fortunate as we are in Australia.  One Water is making a massive difference by installing PlayPumps into communities in Africa and Asia which don’t have running water and now the children can go to school because they don’t have to spend hour’s everyday collecting clean water.  We all drink bottled water, especially over the summer, so next time you reach for a bottle please look for One Water and help us bring clean water to people who aren’t as fortunate as us.”

As part of his ambassadorship for One Water, James O’Connor will be attending One Water events, visiting a One Water PlayPump in South Africa, and campaigning for Australians to change their water brand to One Water.
